Aluminum foil is really handy item that is used in the kitchen, for cooking and wrapping, but some people even use it for treatment of common ailments.

Still, one recent study discovered something that has shed completely new light on this kitchen staple.

According to this study, aluminum was proved to be a neurotoxic heavy metal that has an adverse effect on brain function, and it was even linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Namely, the medical experts warn that exposure to this metal may result in mental decline, loss of coordination, bodily control, memory and balance. It is important to highlight that these effects can be long-lasting.

This study also discovered that there is possibility cooking with aluminum foil to affect the bones, and the reason for that is the metal which accumulates inside the bones taking over calcium in the competition for the tight bone space. This eventually will result in loss of calcium which is necessary for proper bone health.

Additionally, scientists have linked cooking with aluminum foil with pulmonary fibrosis and some other respiratory issues, which are caused by inhalation of aluminum particles. Moreover, grilling with aluminum produces the same effect.

Probably all of you are familiar with the fact that aluminum cans are severe health threat, somehow the tin foil was never subject for any discussion and many people use it on daily basis.

Majority people are unaware of the fact that when is exposed to high temperatures, aluminum foil releases parts of the metal into the food. Even if such tiny pieces are not released, chemical leaching of aluminum still may occur when certain spices or lemons are added.

Chemical engineering researcher at the American University of Sharjah, Dr. Essam Zubaidy had studied the effects of aluminum on cooking. He came to conclusion that one dish cooked in aluminum foil basically can contain up to 400mg of aluminum.

In his words: “The higher the temperature, the more the leaching. Foil is not suitable for cooking and is not suitable for using with vegetables like tomatoes, citrus juice or spices”.

According to World Health Organization, the RDA (recommended daily allowance) for aluminum is limited to 60mg per a day.
